No one wants to crash their motorcycle, but unfortunately, it's an all-too-common occurrence. Every year, several motorcycle riders are killed in accidents in the United States. While there's no surefire way to avoid a crash, there are certain things you can do to greatly reduce your risk. Here are 5 motorcycle safety tips to help you avoid crashing your bike and increase your chances of enjoying many happy miles on the open road.

1. Get Trained and Licensed

Before you even get on a bike, you should receive professional training and get a license. Many states require riders to take a motorcycle safety course before they're legally allowed to ride on the road.

2. Make Yourself Visible

When you're on the road, you want other drivers to see you. Wear bright colors and when it gets dark, make sure that your bike's headlight is turned on. You might also want to consider investing in reflective gear and LED lights.

3. Follow the Speed Limit

Speeding is one of the most common causes of motorcycle accidents. But even if you're obeying the posted speed limit, that doesn't mean you should let your guard down. Be cautious when riding in bad weather or on unfamiliar roads.

4. Avoid Distracted Driving

Keeping yourself focused is another important part of motorcycle safety. That means no cell phones or any other distractions and of course, no alcohol. If you need to take your eyes off the road for any reason, pull over to a safe location first. Make sure to avoid other vehicles' blind spots, be cautious at intersections, and use your horn whenever necessary.

5. Anticipate Hazards

Pay attention to the road and keep an eye out for potential hazards like potholes, debris, and slippery conditions. If you see something ahead, slow down and proceed with caution. When following another car, keep a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. And when being passed by another vehicle, move over to give them plenty of room.
